2017-04-30 - Jimmy Dukes It Out In D.C.!

At long last, the Duke DC Music Pack v2.0 has arrived!

What you get with this is nothing less than a completely new soundtrack for Duke It Out In D.C. with original music, composed by James "Jimmy" Paddock. This creative guy has already shown his qualities as a composer in many Doom community projects (including standalone efforts such as his "Harmony" MIDI Pack), and this debut contribution of his for a Duke3D-related game is a remarkable event that deserves acknowledgement.
Initially, I had already proposed this project to Jimmy back in 2013 (free of charge back then), but it got delayed and did not really kick off before 2016 when it turned into a commission. Until January 2017, I have worked closely with Jimmy to give him ideas about the addon levels and which atmosphere I wished to be conveyed with the music. For digitizing the MIDI files (included in the music pack and usable ingame if two lines in duke3d.def inside of the zipfile are edited), we decided to use Maxime Abbey's Arachno Soundfont for best overall quality. In my opinion, the result is absolutely fantastic. For the first time, the DukeDC levels get their own, individual tracks and feel better than ever when you play them!
Maybe some of you who were using previous versions of my music pack (featuring selected music from various artists) may have problems getting used to the different approach at first, but I am absolutely convinced you will quickly learn to love it just as much as I do!

All that's left to mention is that it was a great pleasure for me to work with Jimmy. Thank you so much for this amazing effort, pal!

2016-11-30 - I'm only patching after all: EDuke32 Addon Compilation v3.12

Another bugfix update for the Addon Compilation since a few issues popped up in the meantime.

Some of you may wonder why "Ghetto" (moviemax.map) is removed in the Urban Map Pack with this update. This was done because Paul Bolduc had contacted me a while ago with the request to remove this level since it was his first. He is not very fond of it by now and doesn't want it to be put into the spotlight like this any longer. I respect his wish and withdraw the map from the compilation. To compensate, I have added a very recent map: "Bad Case of Mondays" by Thedutchjelle, just released in November 2016.

EDuke32 Addon Compilation v3.12 comes with the following changes (compared to v3.11):

  • [UPDATE] Duke Is 007: Ceiling texture correction for blue keycard glass chamber in SNOWBASE

  • [UPDATE] Operation Blitzkrieg: Classic and Polymer editions now both available from the same ingame menu

If you wish to update manually (e.g. because you don't want to download 600+ MB for just a few updated entries), you can get all new files from the development folder. Regarding that, I have posted some instructions in the Duke4.net forums.

2016-11-04 - Hail to the patch, baby: Update-o-rama

After a little break, a few new files have arrived in our Download section. You may especially want to check out the updated World Tour entries after the recent update of the game.

For those of you who had problems running the Addon Compilation with duke3d.grp from the Plutonium Pak or World Tour, be sure to get the v3.1.1 refresh release. By optimizing the addons.grpinfo file, I was able to compress the code and increase compatibility beyond Atomic Edition restrictions. (There's also a minor texture fix for one map of Total Apocalpyse, but that's barely worth mentioning.)

2016-10-20 - Suck it down: Even more files for World Tour fans!

And the files keep coming! This time, it's about a script to create a standalone version of World Tour for EDuke32. Basically, the script copies all required files from your Steam installation of World Tour into your EDuke32 folder, creates a zipfile with all the game data and that's it. Select "worldtour" as "Custom game content directory" in EDuke32 and it's playable!

You can combine this with the PSX Highres Sounds v1.11 pack in your autoload dir. It is now compatible with World Tour!

2016-10-17 - Looks like cleanup on aisle four: Run World Tour in EDuke32!

After the release of Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, Hendricks266 compiled a first patch making World Tour work with EDuke32. Once you drop these files into the World Tour installation folder and run the provided EDuke32 binary, you should be able to play the game. Please note that the current version of the World Tour EDuke32 Compatibility Stopgap (now that's quite a mouthful, isn't it) is still lacking a few quite important features - e.g. don't expect the Incinerator or the Firefly to work properly, and there's also no ending cutscene if you finish E5L7 right now. If those are no showstoppers for you, feel free to give it a shot! As a bonus, the release even allows you to revert to the original red cross medkits (instead of the new ones with pill replacements) if you manage to edit one file (e32wt_start.def) and remove the comment signs there.

Other than that, DukeDC HRP v1.64 and DukeDC Music Pack v1.12 are also available. While the new HRP finally includes a fix for a nasty alignment bug with the title screen (originating from a mistake in the groupfile art), the DC Music Pack finally got an ingame menu disclaimer which informs you that you are running a custom soundtrack which was not officially part of the game. I felt urged to do this after people kept claiming their music didn't work properly if they didn't use the music pack. As a reminder: You are supposed to hear the regular episode 3 soundtrack in Duke It Out In D.C. since this addon never had any custom music (other than Life's A Beach and Nuclear Winter).

2016-10-07 - Aaahhh... much better: Download section full of new stuff!

For a long time, EDuke32 is capable of loading MIDI (and VOC) replacements directly without requiring definitions if the original file names are kept. I thought that the music packs should finally profit from this feature and updated all of them, making the usage of music.def files obsolete. The main advantage is that you should now be able to use any of those music packs without needing the separate override file (formerly available as duke3d_musonly.zip) if you want to experience improved music without HRP.

On October 1, Fox released his 3D classic skyboxes - a leftover from the (unfortunately) cancelled "Hail To The King" edition which was supposed to fix/improve skies in the EDuke32 Polymost renderer. It's also a neat thing for Polymer, so I added this great stuff to the Fixes for Duke Nukem 3D pack, together with Darkus's fixed game.con which addresses a lot of annoyances present in the original game (e.g. kill counter fix, properly rotating gun turrets, sharks counting as enemies and more).

There was some other stuff floating around in the Duke4.net forums for a while which I decided to add: The PSX Highres Sounds feature all the sounds from "Total Meltdown" which are identical to the PC version so you can enjoy higher quality sound effects. There's also ReDuke, a nice Windows port for the first Duke Nukem game which you may not have noticed. Note that you will need the original game files for this, it won't just work out-of-the-box.

Last but not least, something was done with the files for "Duke It Out In D.C.": DukeDC HRP v1.63 had its maphacks removed since they are part of the regular Duke3D HRP for a while now. No need to risk conflicts. Unfortunately, no other changes besides that. In the DukeDC HRP Music Pack v1.11, all MIDI-to-OGG renderings have been replaced by new recordings with the Timbres of Heaven soundfont. I believe this improves music quality of those tracks, however if you don't like the changes, you can stick to your old music pack if you wish. However, you will not be able to play Duke It Out In D.C. without HRP in that case, since this is the second big change which comes with the new version.
